St. George, 8 miles from the Arizona border along I-15, is a retirement community adjacent some of the most attractive mountain and recreational areas in the country. The surrounding red-rock terrain is stunning and Zion National Park is 30 miles to the northeast. Surrounding areas offer extensive recreation opportunities, including golf, hiking and even skiing.
Employment is hard to find outside of the large and growing construction, retail and service sectors, and for such an isolated small city, living and housing costs are uncomfortably high. Violent crime rates are exceptionally low. The area is 115 miles northeast of Las Vegas, the nearest major city with services.
The St. George area is located in an area of undulating arid hills and red-rock bluffs south of the more heavily forested areas of the Dixie National Forest to the north and Zion to the east. The climate is typical dry, mid-altitude desert and features pleasant winters with occasional cold snaps and dry snow but little to no accumulation. Winter nights average just below freezing, with daytime highs in the 50’s and 60’s. Summers are warm to uncomfortably hot with frequent 100-plus weather, although temperatures in nearby mountains can be much cooler. Daily temperature ranges are wide. There are occasional summer thunderstorms particularly during the June “monsoon” season, though rain is much more likely in nearby mountains.
