A City in Transormation -
10/16/2008After eleven years of loyal citizenship in Denver i moved seeking a change of scenery, pace and whatever else i could taste that would be different than the Mile High City flavor, (i should mention however, that i had a great time, it is a great place to live.) So i decided on Chicago as the place of my relocation which, is another great city. When i moved back to Denver one year later in September of this year i was very impressed by the visual appearance of the city that had changed dramatically. Denver is becoming a big city, something that i have been waiting for always knowing that the Mile High City has a lot of potential to be better than what it is and knowing that it is on the brink of achieving big city status.
Today everywhere you look in the Denver metro area you will see 20 or more cranes hundreds of feet tall piecing together new skyscrapers of luxurious condos and big named hotels such as the Ritz Carlton and the Four Seasons, the existing skyscrapers now have exterior lighting where before there was none and that heightens the visual experience of the buildings. Some empty fields and parking lots are now replaced with modernized and luxurious high-rise condominiums. There is better landscaping in certain areas where it was clearly neglected before, the Denver Art Museum expanded and can now house an incredible quantity of art, it is very modern in style and looks crystalline in shape. The museum was constructed out of titanium and the abstract interior is dizzying to look at. It was designed by world renowned architect Daniel Liebeskind. The expanded Denver Art Museum is the first structure built in North America that was designed by Mr. Liebeskind. Behind Union Station is the River Front Park and Commons Park neighborhood where there are several newly constructed high rises, retail stores, pubs and trendy restaurants, the River Front Park neighborhood also harbors the newly constructed and super-modern Museum of Contemporary Art. Before all of this the area was a vacant railroad field with weeds dirt and grass. I should also mention that Colfax, (notorious for its degenerative qualities, high crime rate and homelessness) is under a revitalization project to clean it up and redevelop it, evidence of this is already apparent. Metropolitan Denver has become more liberal than I remember it and the night life has really transformed. More has changed within one year in Denver (proportionately) than in any other city I’ve lived. I was born and raised in Albuquerque and the surrounding area, spent a year in Chicago and I now live in Canon City Colorado.

10/15/2008Lesa, poor lesa, i agree with Steve or ahould i say Jim. Phoenix is a depressing place. Phoenix is a hot, dry, lifeless giant spread out burb, and downtown is a joke, it is not cosmopolitan in anyway, it is not a real city.

10/15/2008I always get excited when i hear or learn that someone is contemplating moving to Denver. So i don't want to discourage you in any way because i found a better quality of life in Denver after moving from Albuquerque and i want to see the same in others. But i will be honest, i have heard many time that the job search is highly competetive even being termed "fierce." I guess that the fairly high population growth that has always seemed to be a relentless occurance in Denver compared with a slower job market growth rate might account for the competetiveness. You know Denver is a highly educated city and there are a lot of graduates after the same jobs, anyway, good luck dude.

10/15/2008I have to pitch in here and mention, first of all regarding the diversity issue, i was born and raised in Albuquerque and it can be summed up quite easily, Mexican American and Native American two realms of cultural differences sort of mixed together to form its own flavor, but in the bigger picture Albuquerque is pretty boring after a while. How do you define diverse? I completely understand where your feelings are coming from. I think you are attracted to the idea of something that is different than what you have been exposed to for most of your life and you are confusing the diversity within each city alone with the diversity between Albuquerque, Salt Lake City and Denver comparatively and your desire to leave the familiarity of the Mile High City. You simply want to move out of the for the most part homogenously white city of Denver to the for the most part homogenously Mexican American city of Albuquerque where life there is just as saturated with the same old, same old stuff as Denver is saturated with its same old, same old stuff. However, change is a much quicker process in Denver. To say that it is more diverse is not accurate, it is only different.

10/15/2008Wow, i just got pummeled by a nonstop stream of negativity from your post. Seriously John, i don't think your statements come from heart, you may simply be a bitter man for your own reasons venting out in heat of your insecurities in a blog where Denver (maybe because of a few bad times you had that you are reflecting on while you lived in the Mile High City) became a nice target of your distraught. But your blog is a façade, it’s a sad, unconscious attempt to feel superior so that the sting of your perceived self worth can go numb. I am sure that Denver isn't the only city whose character you have completely annihilated with your words because I am sure that Denver isn’t the only place where your social flaws have presented complications in your relationships with people. I would love to know why you, a person who has a diverse migration history and who speaks three languages wound up in Clovis, New Mexico?
Denver is a fantastic city. I lived in Denver for seven years six of those seven I spent in a little 450 square foot studio apartment in Uptown and I loved it.

10/14/2008I completely agree with you Chris. Denver suburbs are very conservative whereas downtown Denver and the various immediate neighborhoods surrounding downtown are significantly different. In fact i followed some links from yahoo's login page to statistical information on various cities in the U.S. conducted by Forbes.com and having spent seven years in downtown Denver i was curious to learn how Denver compares to other cities i have lived in such as Chicago and Albuquerque. Refering to metro Denver the democrat/republican ratio is nearly equal to Chicago's. 69.5% of Denver's population is democratic and 29.2% are republicans and 70.2% of Chicago's population is democratic and 29.1% is republican. Certainly if one were to travel not too far outside the downtown area to Englewood for example (highly conservative) that ratio would change dramatically. Location is key for anyone who is seeking a laidback, liberal environment while considering moving to Denver. I highly recommend Uptown, The Highlands and Capitol Hill neighborhoods. I had a little studio apartment in Uptown for six years and i had a lot of fun.
